Reps Debate Immigration, English Only in New Hampshire
I missed the GOP debate of Presidential; contenders last night but the transcript (here) (and CNN videos) suggest that it was an interesting event. Sen. John McCain (here) defended the immigration reform bill in the face of criticism by the other Republican presidential hopefuls. The debate touched on the volatile topic of English as the national language, which Mitt Romney supports even though he has run campaign ads in Spanish. Anti-Immigrant advocate Tom Tancredo registered rabid support for English as the official (and in his mind, it appears, only) language and claimed that he would never advertise in any language other than English. And what did John McCain have to say: “muchas gracias,” were his first words in response to the question. Really.
