The Bill That “Everyone” Loves to Hate
The Senate immigration reform proposal is taking attacks from all sides. A number of Latino advocacy groups, including the Hispanic Federation, the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, the League of United Latin American Citizens, the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities, the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, and the William C. Velasquez Institute, have registered opposition. Mae Ngai in an upcoming issue of The Nation (here) criticizes the bill for failing to increase the number of legal immigrants who can come to the country each year. From the other side of the political spectrum, we all have heard how talk show radio is battering the bill like a piñata. And a restrictionist group — Numbers USA — is aggressively pressuring Senators to oppose the bill.
What does this all mean? At a minimum, we will have an interesting week in Congress.
