Student Fast in Support of DREAM Act Ending Today
“Student week-long fast concludes successfully, still actions continue”
The breaking of student fast for immigration reform and DREAM Act.
What: Students and youth have concluded a week-long fast aimed at urging the House Representatives to move forward immigration reform that includes citizenship for hundreds of thousands of undocumented youth through the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act (“DREAM Act”). The fast began July 2nd, and took place in five cities across the state: Santa Ana, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, San Jose, and San Francisco. The fast comes to an end, but the momentum continues.
When: July 9, 2007 12PM- NOON
Where: San Francisco Civic Center Plaza (in front of City Hall)
Who: 24 fasters ending their one-week fast. Dozens of high school and college students from the California Dream Network, parents, community leaders, education and immigration advocates from across the state as well as legislative representatives from Congressman Mike Honda’s office and Supervisor of City and County San Francisco Gerardo Sandoval. Possible appearances: Representative from Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office.
Why: Students are concluding a strenuous week-long fast that has delivered the message of unity, hope, and action through student leadership in the immigrant rights movement. With the Senate recently failing to move forward a viable immigration reform bill, students’ dreams of attending college and the opportunity of practicing their professions were deferred. However through the one week fast and meeting with key House Representatives, such as Nancy Pelosi’s representative and Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, students shared a direct and personal message of urgency for immigration reform and the DREAM ACT. Also, despite the hate-filled statement for fasters by a certain media personality— “I would say, let them fast until they starve to death then that solves the problem”— no surprise… the students survive! Come share this historical event.
