The Border Boondoggle
In “The Border Boondoggle,” Andrew Cockburn details the expenditure of billions of dollars on the hi-tech militarization of the U.S./Mexico border. His conclusion: “it seems safe to assume that $30 billion and more from now, migrants will still be sneaking in to mow our lawns and clean our discount stores, and that this ongoing threat will ensure ever-expanding rounds of spending. That’s what `militarization of the border’ is all about.”
One thing that the commentary does not focus much on is the death toll from border enforcement. We have written often about the “death on the border,” which has increased dramatically due to the efforts to seal the southern border with Mexico. As it turns out, the border enforcement efforts are both ineffective, wasteful, and immoral. In baseball, strike 3 and you are out.
