Challenge to Operation Stonegarden

Border Network for Human Rights and Paso del Norte Civil Rights Project Respond to Otero County Sheriff’s Department with Legal Action

El Paso, Texas – October 15, 2007- Under the guise of “special enforcement” (Operation Stonegarden), Otero County Sheriff Deputies have wrongfully entered homes, arrested community members, separated families, and created a general sense of insecurity and fear, fostering violations of the human and constitutional rights of Chaparral residents.

In the months since the illegally conducted raids began, the Border Network for Human Rights and Paso del Norte Civil Rights Project documented dozens of testimonies and carefully reviewed them, reaching the conclusion that legal action on behalf of the impacted families is necessary to protect the community from future violations.

Border Network for Human Rights and Paso del Norte Civil Rights Project will hold a press conference this coming Wednesday, October 17, 2007, to announce the details of the lawsuit.
