Houston Grand Opera: Opening of “The Refuge”
We have good immigration news to report from Houston. The Houston Grand Opera put immigration center stage this weekend in a dramatic outreach to the more than 1 million foreign-born residents in the nation’s fourth largest city. The musical and civic event was “The Refuge,” the company’s 36th world premiere and a commission celebrating not only the 20th anniversary of its Wortham Theater Center but also Houston, where more than one out of five people “are not from here.” This exciting new work tells stories from Houston’s African, Central American, Indian, Mexican, Pakistani, Soviet-era Jewish and Vietnamese immigrant communities.
