It Pays to Translate

A number of governmental entities in recent years have embraced English-only policies and distribute information only in English.  The good news is that the federal government does translate some federal information into languages other than English.  And it makes perfect sense for all kinds of reasons.  Consider tax collection.  Blog Emperor Paul Caron has blogged about how the Internal Revenue Service now translates tax law Into Chinese, Korean, Russian and Vietnamese and IRS has long provided a glossary of words and phrases to help Spanish-speaking taxpayers understand and comply with federal income tax law (Publication 850: English-Spanish Glossary of Words and Phrases).  I bet it pays off for the IRS!
