Duncan Hunter Soon to Withdraw from the Presidential Race?

Hunter I blogged the other day about how the most immigration enforcement-oriented Presidential candidates did not come out on top in Iowa; indeed, Iowa winners Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee have been attacked as too pro-immigrant.  And the most restrictionist of all the candidates, Tom Tancredo, dropped out when he failed to round up more than a handful of supporters.  Now, it appears that the next most enforcement-oriented candidate will soon withraw from the Presidential race.

Not invited to the Republican debate last Sunday, Duncan Hunter has been a Republican member of the House of Representatives since 1981 from California’s 52nd congressional district in northern and eastern San Diego.  A staunch proponent of the border fence (here), which he claims to have helped construct in the San Diego area, Hunter probably is the most “hawkish” candidate on immigration who remains in the Presidential race.  Here is his position on border enforcement.

Doesn’t the fact that the candidacies of Tancredo and Hunter have failed to catch fire — or much of any support at all – suggest that Americans are not enamored with their extreme positions on immigration?

UPDATE On Tuesday, Hunter received about 1200 votes in the New Hampshire primary (0%) and finished seventh among the Republicans.
