San Diego Minutemen Adopt a Highway on Border Corridor

101_02703 We at the ImmigrationProf blog are wondering what is going on in this world of cruel ironies.  On Friday, we reported that the Border Patrol (and the federal government) uses federal funds to sponsor a NASACAR car to aid in recruiting officers.  Now, the L.A. Times reports that the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has granted an Adopt-A-Highway stretch of Interstate 5 to the San Diego Minutemen. The two miles of freeway the Minutemen will be charged with cleaning include the U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoint near San Clemente.  Caltrans said the Minutemen got the stretch of I-5 purely by chance. Critics, including the Anti-Defamation League, claim that Caltrans violated its rule that bars groups that advocate violence or discrimination from participating in the program.

Here is the response of the San Diego Minutemen to the controversy:  “The illegal alien groups are hopping mad that American activists would dare pick up trash! Apparently the Border Angels wanted that spot! They can get their own stretch if they want it, perhaps closer to the border. So far they seem more interested in trashing America than actually removing trash….. ”

BTW, the San Diego Minutemen website rates Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, Lou Dobbs (undeclared), and Pat Buchanan as “acceptable” Presidential candidates; Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson are “possibly acceptable,” with the rest of the candidates “Unacceptable!”  For explantion of some of these picks, click here.
