AZ Governor Shows Backbone!
One of the hottest of immigration issues is state and local involvement in immigration enforcement, as the recent controversy in Los Angeles over LAPD’s Special Order 40. It is nice to see a politician buck the tide and defend a pro-law enforcement policy.
Earlier this week, Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano vetoed a measure that would have required local law enforcement to work with federal authorities on immigration enforcement. Napolitano, a Democrat, had been urged to reject House Bill 2807 by Latino activists who feared the measure would lead to increased racial profiling and further alienate the Latino community. The N.Y. Times has praised Napolitano’s veto.
