The Great Immigration Panic
The N.Y. Times has an op/ed today on immigration:
“Someday, the country will recognize the true cost of its war on illegal immigration. We don’t mean dollars, though those are being squandered by the billions. The true cost is to the national identity: the sense of who we are and what we value. It will hit us once the enforcement fever breaks, when we look at what has been done and no longer recognize the country that did it.”
UPDATE: A day after the Times op/ed, the Washington Post ran an immigration commentary (“A Recipe for Weakness “) as well:
“Thanks to the nation’s dysfunctional immigration system and the dysfunctional Congress that keeps it that way, tens of thousands of promising, intelligent, ambitious and highly skilled foreign professionals, including thousands receiving advanced degrees from American universities this month, will be denied a chance to contribute their expertise and energy to the American economy. Few policies match this one is terms of sheer irrationality, and few will do as much damage to this country’s long-term prospects and competitiveness.”
Immigration obviously is one the minds of the editors of two of the nation’s leading newspapers. Maybe a new President and Congress will tackle the difficult issues that face the nation.
