Anti-Immigrant Ordinance Fails in the Heartland!
The City Council of Fremont, Beraska voted down a a proposal targeting undocumented immigration at the end of a hearing that drew more than 1,000 people. The ordinance would have barred renting housing to or hiring undocumented immigrants in a small city of 25,000. Mayor “Skip” Edwards voted “no” to break a 4-4 tie. The mayor said he consulted with Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning and other attorneys in considering the ordinance and concluded that immigration regulation is a federal issue.
The Midwest Regional staff of the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund worked to the proposed Fremont, Nebraska anti-immigrant ordinance. MALDEF sent an 8 page letter to the mayor and council members and provided talking points to community members. Download fremont_ne_mayor.pdf Download fremont_ne_talking_points.pdf
