Undocumented Students at UC

The L.A. Times has a story (which quotes the University of Houston’s immigration and higjher education expert Michael Olivas) today on undocumented university students. It includes an interesting estimate that, in the entire University of California system (and 214,000 students), there are only an estimated 271 to 433 undocumented students.

California and nine other states allow many undocumented students who graduated from California high schools to pay in-state tuition. California public universities do not ask about legal status on applications. Some private universities, including Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara, have scholarships tailored for undocumented immigrants.  Undocumented immigrants are not entitled to most financial aid or loans at public universities.  That explains why their numbers at UC remain low.
