PBS Documentary: Calavera Highway

Dianne Solís writes a nice story about Armando Peña, a Rio Grande Valley native, who sets out on a trek in the PBS documentary Calavera Highway, which will air tonight.  He wants to bury his mamá’s ashes but, during the journey, he digs up ghosts and a deeper understanding of his complex mother. Calavera Highway airs tonight. The story is told by Mr. Peña; his wife, the director-producer Renee Tajima-Peña; and producer Evangeline Griego.  Calavera Highway pays homage to a tender and tough mother, and to her husband, Pedro Peña, who disappeared forever in the deportations of the 1950s known “Operation Wetback.”
