The Prison/Immigration Complex?
Years ago, President (and former General) Dwight D. Eisenhower warned the nation — and correctlly so — of the influence of the “military-industrial complex” on the American political economy. We may have a new complex today that we should be concerned with. Tom Barry (and here) on Dollars & Sense writes on “The New Political Economy of Immigration,” with private industry pushing for ever-stricter enforcement measures that place increasing numbers of immigrants in detention in private detention facilities contracted by the federal government. (For more by Barry on the “outsourcing” of immigrant detention, click here. ). As we have frequently reported, immigration detention can be indefinite and, although perhaps not Gitmo-like, arguably is Gitmo-Lite, at least according to some observers.
