The Proposal: Opening June 2009
Here is an immigration-flavored movie with not-so-common immigrants and undoubtedly a skewed view of the world of immigration that we know and “love.” In The Proposal book editor Margaret (SANDRA BULLOCK) faces deportation to Canada and declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting assistant Andrew (RYAN REYNOLDS). They wed and live happily ever after.
Sounds kind of the 1990 film Green Card with Gérard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell, which had an errily similar ending? No wonder so many people think that sham marriages for immigration purposes run rampant.
Call me old-fashioned but give me El Norte or Casablanca any time.
