Why Deport Maria Edmonson?
The general public should hear about a case getting attention in the Northeast. An immigrant from Colombia with possible U.S. citizenship, Maria Edmondson, age 67, is facing deportation. On April 30, 2009, the U.S. government will seek to commence removal proceedings against her. Both her father and grandfather were U.S. citizens. “The problem is that we don’t have enough documentation to prove that Maria is a U.S. citizen,” her attorney said, despite the fact that her grandfather was born in San Francisco and her father was American by birth, served in the U.S. Army and worked for the American government in the Panama Canal Zone. Maria’s only living immediate family, 2 half-sisters, are both U.S. citizens living in the United States. If deported, Maria may never see them — or her other family — again.
What purpose does it serve to deport an elderly woman from her only family? Don’t U.S. immigration authorities have higher priority cases?
