The Global Detention Project
Detention of noncitizens long has been a controversial issue in the United States, especially after the 1996 immigrtaion reforms. We often forget that detention of noncitizens is a global phenomenon. The Global Detention Project (GDP) offers much information about immigrat detention around the world. It is an inter-disciplinary research endeavor that investigates the role detention plays in states’ responses to global migration, with a special focus on the policies and physical infrastructures of detention. The project, which was initiated in October 2006 with funding from the Geneva International Academic Network, is based at the Graduate Institute’s Programme for the Study of Global Migration.
The GDP website currently highlights immigrant detention in Malaysia and is well worth a visit.
