Protest at Reeves County Detention Center in Pecos, Texas
Stand With Us- December 12th at RCDC
The ACLU of Texas, Grassroots Leadership, Southwest Workers Union and National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights stand together to denounce the serious and widespread human rights abuses exacerbated by the abhorrent conditions at the Reeves County Detention Center (RCDC) in Pecos, Texas. Help us bring much needed attention to the devastating consequences of medical neglect and human rights abuses at the Reeves facility.
Background- Dying For Our Help
RCDC, a county-owned facility run under contract with the GEO Group and overseen by the Bureau of Prisons, was the site of two multi-day uprisings in mid-December and late-January of last year following a string of deaths attributed to the prison’s inattention to medical needs. The catalyst for these uprisings was the death of 32 year-old Jesus Galindo, an epileptic Mexican citizen, who died in solitary confinement due to multiple seizures and inadequate levels of medication. Galindo’s December 12th death was the result of disregard of clear medical needs, the lack of federal oversight and legal protections, and apathy surrounding prisoner well-being. At least nine deaths in the last four years have been reported at the facility, and prisoners there live daily with fear for their lives.
TAKE ACTION- Help us make this event a success!
Join us for an afternoon march and vigil at the Reeves County Detention Facility on December 12th, The day of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the one year anniversary of the prisoner uprising, to shine a spotlight on RCDC and demand accountability. We invite friends and families of those detained along with organizations concerned with human, civil and immigrant rights to join us. If you would like to participate in this important event, please contact Tracey Hayes, Outreach and Advocacy Coordinator of the ACLU of Texas at thayes@aclutx.org. If you can’t make it, help us spread the word by forwarding this email, telling your friends, sharing our website, or tell us how you think you or your organization can help.
You can also send a letter to BOP demanding accountability for the medical neglect and human rights abuses at RCDC and that it terminate its contract with Reeves County and the GEO group if they are not in compliance with the most basic detention standards.
If you can’t make it to the vigil in Pecos, join us at the GEO Group regional headquarters in New Braunfels on December 10th at 12pm. We will present a letter to GEO officials asking GEO to comply with basic human rights standard or give up their contract with the BOP.
