CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS (500-1500 words due Friday, May 7)
Race-Talk Special Edition: Organizing Latino Immigrants for Social Justice
On May 12, 2010, the film Mississippi Chicken ( www.mississippichicken.com/about.asp<http://www.mississippichicken.com/about.asp>) will make its Ohio debut. Questions of race, workers’ rights and exploitation form the crux of this intriguing documentary about the vulnerabilities, challenges, and triumphs of Latino immigrants living and working in rural Mississippi’s chicken processing communities. Though the film is set in the South, the issues it raisesinjustice and resistance, insecurity and hope, alienation and belonging resonate in communities across the country and beyond.
With the film as our catalyst, Race-Talk (www.race-talk.org<http://www.race-talk.org>) is accepting blog submissions for a week-long special edition, Organizing Latino Immigrants for Social Justice. We invite you to submit a brief, 500-1500 word entry for inclusion in this forum. We welcome submissions on any aspect of Latino immigrant organizing. What are the issues around which folks in your community are mobilizing? What strategies have been effective? What have been the major challenges? In what ways is globalization complicating or offering new opportunities for organizing efforts? What policies do we hope our organizing efforts will affect on a local, national, or international level? How might academics, advocates, or others support movements for immigrant, worker, and racial justice?
Submissions are brief and time is short, so write about what you know, what’s close to your heart, or what you’ve shared elsewhere in another format. Send entries to bell.875@osu.edu<mailto:bell.875@osu.edu>, with “Organizing Latino Immigrants for Social Justice” in the subject, and be sure to include your full name and a bio (a couple of sentences identifying yourself). Articles will be posted on Race-Talk<http://www.race-talk.org/> the week of May 10-14.
Please feel free to forward this call to others, and direct questions to me, Angela Stuesse, at astuesse@gmail.com<mailto:astuesse@gmail.com>. Thanks!
