DREAMers Arrested outside Indiana Governor’s Office

Indiana State Police arrested six undocumented immigrant students Monday when they refused to leave the reception area in Gov. Mitch Daniels’ office.

All six were charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass.

The arrests were related to a protest elsewhere in the building against a bill cracking down on undocumented immigration that Daniels is expected to sign, as well as separate state legislation prohibiting in-state tuition for undocmented students.

The students wanted to speak with the governor, who was in his office but declined.

The group also supports the federal DREAM Act, which would provide a conditional pathway to legal residency for qualified undocumented students. Read more…
