Good News and Bad News: DHS Slashes 287(g) Budget
DHS has announced its new budget that includes a reduction in 287(g) agreement funding by $17 million! These 287(g) agreements are infamous for leading to harrassment of citizens and noncitizens by local authorities; the most noteworthy offender was Sheriff Joe Arpaiao of Maricopa County, Arizona. The problem is that the reduction in 287(g) agreements is based on DHS’s love and confidence in the Secure Communities program which enables, in ICE’s opinion, the government to do anything it wants to with fingerprint submissions, without the permission or cooperation of local authorities. Under 287(g), local authorities were paid to cooperate with ICE. Under S-Comm, ICE does whatever it wants to without local cooperation…at least that’s the case until we do whatever we can to stop S-Comm.
Here’s the announcement of the DHS budget.
