Why LGBT Orgs are Standing Up for Immigration Reform
From Spitfire Strategies
Dear colleague,
As the Senate debates comprehensive immigration reform, LGBT leaders from across the county are standing up for compassionate, common sense immigration reform that unites American families. Their support for this legislation goes far beyond the issue of same-sex binational couples – they are fighting to pass this legislation for all 11 million undocumented men, women and children living in the U.S., including the 267,000 undocumented LGBT immigrants.
Right now, the only issue that has gotten any traction in the mainstream media about the intersection of LGBT issues and immigration has been around same-sex binational couples. There’s so much more to the issue and why these groups are taking such a strong stand for immigration reform. Please join us for a call with leaders from some of the largest LGBT rights organizations and LGBT immigrants who will share their firsthand accounts of how they have been impacted by our broken immigration system. Information about the call can be found below.
From eliminating the one-year ban on applying for asylum to providing protections for undocumented youth and improving conditions for people held in detention facilities, the Senate immigration bill addresses many issues that will particularly impact LGBT immigrants. We hope you will join this call to hear more about why comprehensive immigration reform is a historic step forward for all immigrants and the LGBT community.
Best,
Phoebe Kilgour
