Throwaway kids: disciplined California teens struggle to school themselves
Susan Ferriss of the Center for Public Integrity reports on school discipline practices that are having an adverse impact on many students of Latino immigrant parents. Children of farmworker parents have been removed from regular schools for disciplinary reasons, and then told to enroll in alternative schools that are so far away – 20 miles, even 40 miles – that it is impossible for parents to get them there. As a result, the children had to be put in on independent study at home. The state of California has no idea how many kids are put on independent study in these alternative county schools.
