DHS OIG Report on Adelanto Immigration Detention Facility Finds Nooses in Cells, Other Detention Standards Violations
The Office of the Inspector General at the Department of Homeland Security has issued a report on detention conditions at the Adelanto immigration detention facility in Adelanto, CA. The report is a result of an unannounced inspection of the facility in May 2018. The OIG report finds, among other things, multiple nooses made out of bedsheets in jail cells (thereby increasing the risk of suicide at a facility that has already had at least one suicide this year and several suicide attempts), excessive use of segregation (including the example of a blind, limited English proficient detainee held in restrictive segregation), and poor medical and dental care (such as the failure to ever provide fillings, to the point that one detainee had multiple teeth fall out while waiting for two years for treatment for cavities).
Approximately 2,000 people are held in immigration detention at Adelanto, which is operated by the GEO Group. Miriam Jordan has also covered this story at the New York Times.
