In late June, China passed a new security law for Hong Kong. The law authorizes severe punishment for political protestors and restricts the independence of Hong Kong.

The United Kingdom has responded to this change by coming up with a new pathway to UK citizenship for persons holding Hong Kong’s British National (Overseas) passports. (BNO). BNO holders will be given “leave to remain” in the UK for five years on a path towards full citizenship.

Notably, this offer isn’t only open to BNO passport holders themselves. It’s open to their spouses and children under 18.
