Reshaping the Department of Homeland Security in the Biden Administration
An article by Zolan Kanno-Youngs in Sunday’s New York Times digs into how President-elect Biden may go about implementing his immigration plan. Many immediate changes are expected to focus on reversing the policies of the Trump administration, such as the Muslim Ban and the attempt to end DACA protections for immigrants brought to the United States as young children. Other important policy announcements are expected to focus on reversing asylum policies implemented under Trump, such as metering and Trump’s Remain in Mexico initiative.
Central to any plan, the article emphasizes, is the reshaping of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the largest law enforcement agency in the country. Drawing on interviews with 16 current or former DHS officials and Biden advisers, the article predicts that the Biden administration will shift department priorities to include defending against climate change, disasters, and cyberthreats.
The Biden administration will also be busy filling key posts as well as those that have been left vacant. As immprof reported two days ago, a federal judge recently found that even the acting secretary of DHS Chad Wolf was “not lawfully serving” in his position.
