BIMI Summer Institute in Migration Research Methods 2023

BIMI

For the fourth year since 2018, UC Berkeley and Penn State are offfering methods training to immigration researchers. The Berkeley Interdisciplinary Migration Initiative (BIMI) Summer Institute in Research Methods provides a venue to learn a variety of methods: from interviewing, to survey reserach, to mixed methods. The 10-day workshop (June 7-June 15) features presentations from visiting faculty and interactive workshops for a cohort of graduate students and early career professors who apply to the program.  It is co-directed by Professors Irene Bloemraad and Jennifer Van Hook.

Topics for 2023 focus on research methodology in the context of migration. Here is the schedule:

June 7 – Introductions, ethics, why interview

June 8 – Jennifer Glick, Penn State: survey research and comparative projects

June 9 – Tomas Jimenez, Stanford – in-depth inerviews, mixed methods

June 12 – Taeku Lee, Harvard – surveys, recruitment, response rates, measuring race

June 13 – Ana Martinez-Donate, Drexel University – mixed methods and community engagement

June 14 – Coding interviews and professional skills (grant writing, media)

The second week of the training institute shifts to students presenting their own projects that apply the skills they learned during week one.
