Immigration law professors around the country had a whole lot to celebrate in 2023. Check out these professional developments.

New Jobs:

  • Jocelyn B. Cazares Willingham joined the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law as co-director of the school’s Immigration and Human Rights Clinic.
  • Keith Cunningham-Parmeter was hired by Lewis & Clark Law School.
  • P. Deep Gulasekaram lateraled to Colorado Law.
  • Lindsay M. Marris lateraled to the University of San Francisco School of Law where she is the director of the school’s Frank C. Newman International Human Rights Clinic.
  • Evelyn Marcelina Rangel-Medina joined Temple University James E. Beasley School of Law as an Assistant Professor of Law.
  • Marie Sayaka Nelson joined Michigan State University College of Law as the Interim Director of MSU’s Immigration Law Clinic.
  • Mauricio E. Noroña joined Touro Law as a tenure-track professor, launching the school’s new immigration clinic.
  • Sabrina Rivera is (re)launching the Immigration and Deportation Defense Clinic at Western State College of Law in Irvine, CA.
  • Abel Rodríguez lateraled to St. John’s University School of Law.
  • Carrie Rosenbaum started her first tenure-track gig at Chapman, where she previously served as a Visiting Assistant Professor.
  • Rachel Rosenbloom (Northeastern) spent Spring 2023 as a visiting scholar at the Center for Race and Gender at U.C. Berkeley.
  • Joel Sati started his first tenure-track gig at the University of Oregon School of Law.
  • Anne Schaufele joined the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law as co-director of the school’s Immigration and Human Rights Clinic.
  • Veronica T. Thronson is serving as the Visiting Clinical Professor and Interim Director of Penn State Law’s Center for Immigrants’ Rights Clinic.

Promotions and Awards:

  • Nadia Anguiano (Minnesota) was promoted to Associate Clinical Professor of Law (from Visiting Assistant Clinical Professor) and appointed Director of the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic.
  • Ava Ayers (Albany) received tenure.
  • Jennifer Chacón (Stanford) was awarded a chair, and is now the Bruce Tyson Mitchell Professor of Law.
  • Pooja R. Dadhania (Cal Western) received tenure.
  • Kate Jastram (U.C.S.F.) was named the Sergio Vieira de Mello Chair of International Refugee Law
  • Kevin Johnson (Davis) received the Michael A. Olivas Award for Outstanding Leadership in Diversity and Mentoring in the Legal Academy.
  • Kit Johnson (Oklahoma) was named the Hugh Roff Professor of Law in December.
  • Catherine Y. Kim (Brooklyn) received the Don Forchelli Chair.
  • Jennifer Lee (Temple) became Temple’s first tenured clinician.
  • Daniel Morales (Houston) received the Dwight Olds Chair.
  • Craig Mousin (DePaul) was awarded the Via Sapientiae Award for lifetime service to DePaul. In addition, Craig and his wife, Chris Inserra, were awarded the Robert H. Kirschner Award for Global Activism by The Kovler Center for Survivors of Torture.
  • Huyen Pham (TAMU) became a University Distinguished Professor, TAMU’s highest research honor.
  • Michele R. Pistone (Villanova) was selected by the Rockefeller Foundation for the Bellagio Residency. She will be spending March in a palace on Lake Como in Italy thinking about how best to expand access to justice in immigration.
  • Shruti Rana lateraled to Mizzou Law.
  • Shalini Bhargava Ray (Alabama) received tenure.
  • Juliet Stumpf (Lewis & Clark) was named the Edmund O. Belsheim Professor of Law this year.
  • Veronica Thronson (MSU) was recognized by the State Bar of Michigan with its Champion of Justice award, given to a practicing lawyer or judge exemplifying “integrity and adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession, superior professional competence, and extraordinary professional accomplishments that benefit the nation, state, or local community in which the lawyer or judge lives.”
  • Jonathan (“Jon”) T. Weinberg (Wayne State) was named a “Distinguished Professor” in May.

Administrative Gigs:

  • Marisa Cianciarulo became dean of Western State College of Law.
  • Lindsay Harris (USF Law) is serving as the Academic Director of International Programs.
  • Kevin Johnson (Davis) announced that he will be stepping down as dean of UC Davis Law in July 2024.
  • Shruti Rana is serving as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Inclusive Excellence and Strategic Initiatives at the University of Missouri.
  • David B. Thronson (MSU) stepped down from his role as Associate Dean for Experiential Education.

Government Gigs:

  • Shoba Sivaprasad Wadhia took a leave of absence from Penn State Law to serve as the Officer for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in the Department of Homeland Security.

  • Ming H. Chen (UC Law SF) won a Robertson Research Award to pursue empirical research on high-skilled workers and was selected as a Public Voices Fellow for PD Soros and the Op-Ed Project.
  • Joel Sati (Oregon) completed his PhD in Jurisprudence and Social Policy from Berkeley.

Babies:

  • Kristina Campbell adopted her 16-year-old daughter Rosmery from Colombia this fall. Rosmery joins sister Flor (adopted from Colombia in 2019) in expanding the Campbell household.
  • Emily Trostveit Ngara (GSU) welcomed baby girl Aster Lesedi on Halloween! Aster came into the world at a whopping 10lbs 6oz and 24 inches long. She joins brother Kai Simbiso in expanding the Ngara household.
