From the Bookshelves: Welcome the Wretched by Cesar Garcia Hernandez
Professor Cesar Garcia Hernandez’s latest book, Welcome the Wretched: In Defense of the “Criminal Alien”, is now available. The book is the culmination of years of thinking and writing on the convergence of criminal law and immigration law. After exposing the problems of detention, Garcia Hernandez takes a frontal attack in this book: he argues for separating immigration enforcement from the criminal legal system altogether. He draws on history, legal analysis, philosophy, and personal narrative about his experiences growing up in the Borderlands in a compelling and important read.
Some praise for the book here:
“A full-throated defense of people…who have journeyed to the United States, no matter the risks, because the alternative was unthinkable.” – Cristian Farias
“Timely insights into the vexing problem of citizenship in America.” – Kirkus Reviews
“For those seeking to understand the traps and hidden history of immigration law.” – Library Journal
Professor Garcia Hernandez is the Gregory H. Williams Chair in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. He is currently touring the country and talking about his book. Check the calendar to see if he’ll be near you so that you can obtain a signed copy or perhaps have him drop by your school or local bookstore for another talk.
