Did you already know about the Border Patrol’s tequila scandal that’s being investigated by the Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility? I can’t believe that May 2024 news passed me right by.
At issue are the connections that Border Patrol chief Jason Owens and Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol sector chief Gloria Chavez have with tequila maker Francisco Javier González. González is the grandson of the founder of Don Julio tequila.
CBP’s PR folks are looking to see if Owens and Chavez reported their connections to González and, in particular, their attendance at a party in Jalisco, Mexico, at Tequila Casa de los González where “González and the Border Patrol leaders discussed making a Border Patrol-branded tequila for the 100th anniversary of the Border Patrol” as NBC reports.
The two Border Patrol leaders are also under investigation for their connections to Mexican American businessman Eduardo Garza who introduced them to González.
It appears that, in light of these investigations, there will be no centennial Border Patrol tequila for us to taste test at the next immprof get together.
