Resistance to the Oppression of Noncitizens

Friends

It’s so important for all of us to step up and contribute to the resistance against the oppression of ICE enforcement that is riddled with racism and a lack of humanity. Here are just a few reasons that resistance is important in times of oppression:

  • Defense of human rights: Resistance helps protect fundamental rights and freedoms that are often suppressed under oppressive regimes—such as freedom of speech, assembly, and due process.

  • Prevention of normalization: Without resistance, authoritarian practices can become normalized, leading to public apathy and long-term entrenchment of oppression.

  • Empowerment of the marginalized: Resistance gives voice and agency to those most affected by state violence, discrimination, or inequality, helping build solidarity and collective power.

  • Historical legacy of change: Major social and political reforms—such as civil rights, decolonization, or democratic transitions—have often been achieved through organized resistance.

  • Moral accountability: Resistance can expose the moral failings of the regime, holding oppressive governments accountable in the eyes of their citizens and the international community.

  • Catalyst for awareness and solidarity: It raises national and global awareness, inspiring others to act or support the cause, even across borders.

  • Disruption of unjust systems: Strategic resistance—through protest, civil disobedience, strikes, or legal challenges—can disrupt and delegitimize systems of control.

  • Preservation of truth and memory: Resistance often keeps historical memory alive, countering propaganda and preserving the stories of victims and dissenters for future generations.
