Job Announcement: Georgetown Clinical Director for CALS
Georgetown Law seeks applications for a tenured or tenure-track faculty position to direct the Center for
Applied Legal Studies (CALS) Clinic beginning July 1, 2026.
Founded by Professor Philip Schrag and co-directed by Professor Andrew Schoenholtz, CALS is one of the
nation’s first law school clinics that focused on asylum law. For more than 30 years, CALS faculty, fellows,
and students have represented asylum seekers who have fled human rights abuses and persecution in their
home countries. Under close faculty supervision, law students serve as lead counsel in all aspects of their
clients’ cases—including fact investigation, legal research, brief writing, and representation in hearings
before immigration judges and interviews before asylum officers. Through this intensive 12-credit per
semester clinic, students gain critical lawyering skills while grappling with complex issues of international
human rights, administrative law, and ethics. CALS fosters deep student reflection on the lawyer’s role,
trauma-informed advocacy, and the intersection of law and policy in the immigration system. With the
founding director’s retirement, the incoming director will have flexibility to shape the long-term future of
CALS while maintaining its focus on immigration law.
The appointments committee is particularly interested in candidates with prior full-time clinical teaching
experience as well as prior asylum and immigration law experience, preferably as a law school clinic
director. Georgetown Law has a unitary tenure track. Candidates must demonstrate a record of strong
academic performance and either an excellent scholarly record (if a lateral candidate) or excellent potential
for scholarly achievement (if an entry-level candidate). All candidates must hold a J.D. and be a member
of a state bar prior to the start date. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Georgetown Law has operated its top-ranked in-house clinical program for more than 50 years. Through
this program, students learn the practical art of lawyering while providing quality legal representation to
under-represented individuals and organizations. We offer 17 different clinics and more than 300 law
students participate in our clinics every year.
Candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, references, a one-to-two page statement about
the candidate’s clinical pedagogy, and a scholarly agenda through this Georgetown University Interfolio
faculty search portal by October 1, 2025. Questions regarding this position should be directed to Aderson
Francois, Chair of the Appointments Committee – Clinical.
The projected salary for this position is $190,000 – $250,000. Compensation is determined by a number of
factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills,
and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
