Families in Mexico and the U.S. got to meet and kiss each other — through a chain-link fence

Cindy Carcamo and Molly Hennessy-Fiske report on families that reunited yesterday at the U.S.-Mexico border — to the west of El Paso and its sister city, Ciudad Juarez — where a more than 15-foot chain-link fence divides the countries. “Immigrant rights activists had planned a highly orchestrated event that included music, testimonials and the release of balloons. But for the families who assembled at the fence Monday, it was an intimate affair — a rare opportunity to meet and touch. . . . The event, timed to coincide with Pope Francis’ visit to Mexico, drew about 300 people to a rural site near where Texas, New Mexico and Mexico meet. About 50 gathered on the Mexican side and 250 in the U.S. at a gravel lot that is also the site of an annual get-together for families split by the border.”
