Beyond National Security Report

The Program on Human Rights & the Global Economy (PHRGE) at Northeastern University School of Law is pleased to present a report on “Beyond National Security: Immigrant Communities and Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights,” an October 2010 gathering of community activists, immigration and asylum lawyers, civil rights and human rights lawyers, workers’ rights advocates, political scientists, sociologists, public health specialists, journalists, law students, and legal scholars.

The two-day gathering inspired energetic dialogue among members of the public and a diverse group of advocates on the roles that the international human rights framework could play in the U.S. and transnationally. The Boston Principles The institute’s participants also produced a set of guidelines, “The Boston Principles on the Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights of Noncitizens,” (May 1, 2011) which is available for endorsement by community organizations, adoption by state and local representatives, and other progressive uses by activists, practitioners, and scholars.
