reports on an inquiry made by Senator John McCain to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano about the decision to cut America’s Toughest Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Maricopa County from the 287(g) program in which local governments can assist the feds in immigration enforcement. In an apparent fit of pique, Arpaio orchestrated immigration sweeps begininning October 16 in heavily Latino sections of metropolitan Pheonix, despite claims from people in those neighborhoods that Arpaio and his department is guilty of racial profiling of Latinos.
