Postcards from the Edge: Skirmishing Over the Arizona Law Continues
The controversy over Arizona’s immigration law subsided somewhat over the last week but continues nonetheless. Lawsuits continue to be filed and more no doubt will be. The law continues to generate commentary in papers across the country. Peter Schrag writes about “Bashing Immigrants: American as Apple Pie” and Ruben Navarrette, Jr. warns Republicans to tread lightly on immigration or risk alienating Latino voters. Others suggest that the Arizona law shows the need for comprehensive immigration reform. Talks of a boycott (and here) of the state continue and Arizona’s universities fear that out-of-state students will decrease in numbers.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has criticized President Obama for not enforcing the immigration laws through a one-sided video that focuses more on the negative impacts of the drug trade than on immigration. By the way, some might say that we have the President indirectly to blame for Governor Brewer becoming governor of Arizona. Brewer ascended to the governorship when the President appointed Governor Janet Napolitano as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
