New “Haitian Immigrant Resource Guide” Lists Local Resources for Earthquake Survivors
The nonprofit Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians today released a free Haitian Immigrant Resource Guide. The guide is specifically designed to serve earthquake survivors, who continue to arrive in the Philadelphia area a year after the devastating quake that struck Haiti. This booklet includes information about healthcare, education, housing, and other critical issues for new arrivals. Approximately 11,000 Haitians live in the Philadelphia region, according to the Census Bureau, and the community is even larger when second-generation Haitian-Americans are included. The guide is designed to assist immigrants themselves, as well as the friends, family, social workers or librarians who may be assisting them. The guide may be especially useful for new arrivals who are more isolated.
With simple, clear explanations about topics such as enrolling a child in school or learning English, the Haitian Immigrant Resource Guide will help immigrants quickly become integrated in the community.
The guide is available online.
