Immigrants in Fear on July 4
The N.Y. Times editorial board attacks the recent “do it yourself” anti-immigrant laws in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, states that all have claimed to be the “New South” in recent years. As immigrants might say, however, the new boss — and the new Jim Crow — looks a lot like the old boss — and the old Jim Crow.
The Times raises important issues. Will Congress step up to the plate on immigration reform? And what will the Obama administration do as states are seeking to make undocumnted immigrants — as well as lawful immigrants and U.S. citizens of particular ancestries — live in fear? The administration sent the Justice Department to Arizona. What about Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina?
