Immigration Protesters March in Georgia

Huffington Post reports that somewhere between 8,000 and 14,000 marchers converged on the Georgia Capitol yesterday to protest the state’s new enforcement-oriented immigration law.  Six protesters reportedly were arrested.

Spring 2006 saw immigration marches across the country responding to the passage of an extrememely enorcement-oriented immigrtaion bill in the U.S. House of Representatives.  Although the mass marches helped kill that bill, the marches subsided and Congress failed to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

The recent spate of state action could ultimately trigger collective action like that seen in the spring of 2006.  We shall see.  One thing is certain, however.  Until Congress acts and passes meaningful immigration reform, we can expect continued skirmishing on immigration at a state and local level across the United States.
