Sonoma Sheriffs Accept Matriculas: Soft on Crime?

The Sonoma County (CA) Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday that it would accept Mexican consular cards, also known as matrícula, as a valid form of identification. The change in policy will keep undocumented immigrants without other verifiable identification, out of jail. The Sheriff’s Office also believes that acceptance of the Mexican identification will allow undocumented victims to report crimes more readily (and without fear of removal).
