What Part of “Illegal” Don’t You Understand? In opposition to Traffic Ticket “Amnesties”

In the discussions over immigration reform, “amnesty” has become a dirty word in some circles. It always has been surprising to me that amnesties for overdue taxes, traffic tickets, and even unlicensed guns, fail to generate the vitriol that even raising the issue of a path to legalization for undeocumented immigrants seems to.

Under a ew state law, California is bringing back an amnesty program that allows anyone with an unpaid traffic ticket dating from January 2009 or earlier to pay it off for half the original fine.
