Immigration Will Heat Up as an Issue in South Carolina Republican Presidential Primary

Expect to see (or hear about) television advertisements of the restrictionist group NumbersUSA in South Carolina as the Republican presidential primary on January 21 grows closer. Immigration appears to be growing as an issue in the South Carolina primary.

Immigration — especially immigration from Mexico — has been an issue in recent times in South Carolina. Last June, the South Carolina legislature joined the growing number of states and passed a state immigration law. The law is similar in important respects to Arizona’s S.B. 1070, which is currently before the U.S. Supreme Court. In December, a district court enjoined several key provisions of the South Carolina law.
