House Votes to Defund DACA Program for DREAM Students

InsideHigherEd.com reports that the House of Representatives voted 224-201 yesterday to end the Department of Homeland Security’s “Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” (DACA) program, which allows noncitizens who were brought to the United States unlawfully as children to avoid deportation and obtain work authorization. The provision, an amendment to the department’s budget for the 2014 fiscal year, is unlikely to become law — the White House has vowed that it would not — but illustrates the conflict over immigration as Congress continues th edebate on comprehensive reform.
