Did Anti-Muslim Sentiment Contribute to the Guilty Verdict in the Serial Trial?
As highlighted on ImmigrationProf blog in November, Serial, a spinoff of the radio program This American Life, explores a real-life murder mystery and has become nothing less than a media sensation.
Season one investigates a 1999 Baltimore murder case, specifically the case of Adnan Syed, a U.S. citizen and son of immigrants from Pakistan, who may or may not have been wrongly convicted in 1999 of killing Hae Min Lee, Syed’s ex-girlfriend and a high school senior.
Serial’s investigative team follows up on long-dormant leads, re-checks alibis, and questions assumptions. Host Koenig has revealed that she doesn’t know how the story, which is still airing episodes, will end.
Serial episode 10 raises the possibility that the specter of anti-Muslim sentiment may have influenced the jury in finding Adnan Syed guilty. Click here for in-depth analysis. Judge for yourself!
