Europe’s Current Refugees
The flow of refugees across Europe has been in the news this week. This article from The Independent has lots of basic information about the current refugee flows in Europe.
The Independent further reports that European leaders are preparing to create a European Union-wide border protection force to deal with the refugee crisis. Under plans being discussed by officials in Brussels, legal responsibility for deporting people deemed to be economic migrants would pass from the member states to the EU. The proposal will be discussed at the meeting of EU interior and justice ministers later this month. At the same time the Commission will draw up a list of “safe countries of origin”. Migrants from these countries would be returned, because the EU considers them to be sufficiently stable. The list is expected to include all the Balkan States, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Senegal and a number of other African countries.
Fraser Nelson opines that the “Great Migration,” fueled by the pursuit for opportunity, is likely to remain for decades.
