Love in the Digital Age: Jorge & Magda — Separated by the U.S. Immigration Laws
The first story in a new series, “Love in the Digital Age,” is about a couple called Jorge & Magda. Magda got caught in the 1996 change to immigration law. She overstayed her visa and left the country, returning without inspections. Despite getting married to Jorge, she could not adjust her status, even though he is a US citizen. Magda now has to live outside the US for ten years. She and Jorge and 3 years into that ten-year separation.
Magda lives in a village called Margaritas, population 3,000, about 80 miles east of Guadalajara, Mexico. She grew up there, and she still has relatives there. Jorge works in Silicon Valley and sees Magda every two or three months. Magda often meets him in Tijuana, where Jorge was born, or he flies to Guadalajara, a 3½- to four-hour journey from San Jose.
This story is about how beautifully they live their marriage online in between visits. “Love in the Digital Age” is a new podcast/broadcast series. It airs statewide on The California Report and involves in-depth, first-person stories about human relationships experienced through the digital filter. Here’s the press release on the new series.
