Bill to Restrict Refugee Admissions Stopped by Senate Democrats

CNN and The Hill report that Senate Democrats blocked consideration of a Republican bill that would have restricted admissions of refugees from Syria and Iraq. In exchange for taking up the bill, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) sought approval of a handful of amendments, including one on Donald Trump‘s push to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country.  The 55 to 43 vote was largely split down party lines and fell short of the 60 votes needed for the bill to advance. The result means the refugee bill, which passed the House with broad bipartisan support in November, likely is dead for the year.
