NPR on Deported Veterans
NPR’s Morning Edition today discusses veterans of the U.S. armed forces who have been deported to Mexico. The report begins:
During World War II, thousands of Americans lied about their age to enlist in the military. During the Iraq war, Daniel Torres lied about something else.
He lied about his citizenship. And while Torres was able to serve in Iraq, he was ultimately deported after the truth was uncovered.
Other non-citizen veterans have been deported on the basis of criminal convictions. Some suffer from drug and alcohol addiction.
The deported veteran population is substantial enough that, in Tijuana, one deported Army vet named Hector Barajas, runs a shelter for deported veterans.
