Another Border Tunnel Tale

Carving out a tunnel to run drugs from Mexico into the United States isn’t something new. Heck, Modern Marvels shined a spotlight on the practice back in 2010. But tunnels have typically been dug in the area near San Diego where the ground is soft and the digging easy, not to mention a place where warehouses abound on both sides of the border and provide cover for tunnel activities.

Which is why it was a surprise when officials found a new tunnel in Calexico, California – about 100 miles from San Diego. Calexico has tough ground, hard for digging. And it’s largely residential.

CNN reports that smugglers, undeterred by those obstacles, built a residential home in Calexico, leaving a hole in the concrete floor for “a safe,” built a tunnel, and began running drugs. The operation was in place for less than a month before being discovered and shut down.

Without question, another tunnel will be constructed in its place. Millions of dollars in sales of illicit drugs are at stake.
